WATCH: Attorney General Stein Fights for Fair Rental Pricing, While Robinson Comes up Empty

On Friday, Attorney General and Democratic nominee for Governor Josh Stein announced that after a year-long investigation, “the Department of Justice in North Carolina is suing a property management software company for artificially raising rental prices.” Thanks to Stein’s leadership, North Carolina is joining several other states, as well as the US Department of Justice, in suing RealPage and fighting against anti-competitive algorithms that help landlords charge higher prices.

Spectrum News explains that Stein’s lawsuit is “part of the larger goal to protect affordable housing and rental opportunities throughout the state.” Meanwhile, when Spectrum asked the Mark Robinson campaign about “his plans to make housing more affordable,” the campaign couldn’t even be bothered to say the word “housing.”

As Attorney General, Josh Stein has fought against unlawful and discriminatory housing practices and fair housing for all. During the COVID pandemic, Stein worked to protect homeowners, particularly seniors, who were at risk of foreclosure. He led a coalition of 17 states opposing changes to a Department of Housing and Urban Development rule that protected consumers from loan discrimination. He supported the Unfair Real Estate Agreements Act, which prevents companies from employing oppressive and excessively long-term agreements that undermine homeownership, and he supported the Federal Reserve’s proposal to prevent racially discriminatory housing practices and encourage financial institutions to assist underserved communities. His first job out of law school was developing affordable housing in Durham, NC.

As Governor, Josh Stein will work to expand housing options across the state by increasing workforce homeownership opportunities, expanding the supply of affordable rental housing, and combating homelessness.
