Robinson Refuses to Apologize for “Skirts” Comment
Yesterday, reporting out of Charlotte revealed that Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson was given the chance to apologize for his comments saying that abortions happen because women “weren’t responsible enough to keep your skirt down.” While Robinson’s press aide tried to stop him from answering the question, he “overrule[d]” the press aide and refused to apologize for his misogynistic comments.
During this same breakfast, Robinson also conveniently “skirt[ed]” around [his] abortion stance,” saying, “it is time for us to move on, folks” and “my opinion on that right now matters very little.” His desire to “move on” from talking about abortion comes the same week that he told WSOC, also in Charlotte, that as Governor he would “absolutely” sign further restrictions on abortion.
Robinson’s disrespect for women continues to be on full display, as new reporting from the Huffington Post reveals his opposition to birth control. In two different instances, Robinson “said he thinks young women are more likely to be promiscuous if they use birth control” and “dismissed the idea of educating young women about sex and birth control,” saying they just “get this under control” while “repeatedly waving his hand near his groin.”
“Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson does not miss a chance to disrespect women, so it should be no surprise that he missed his chance to apologize to them,” said Morgan Hopkins, a spokeswoman for the campaign. “Thankfully, North Carolina’s voters won’t miss their chance to vote for a candidate who consistently respects and stands up for women: Josh Stein.”
