Josh Stein: One Year Out From Election Day, Democracy Is On The Ballot
“In our democracy, the people are supposed to possess all the political power.”
One year out from Election Day 2024, Attorney General and candidate for governor Josh Stein penned an op-ed for the News & Observer emphasizing the importance of protecting our democracy next year: “More than candidates, democracy itself will be on the ballot.”
Dangerous lies and conspiracy theories about the 2020 election threaten our democracy and have given rise to voter suppression efforts, including gerrymandering district maps and restricting access to early voting and mail-in voting. As right wing politicians continue to undermine our democracy, Attorney General Stein encourages North Carolinians to “keep the faith” and “keep voting.”
As Attorney General, Stein put a stop to then-governor Pat McCrory’s monster anti-voter law and stood up against the legislature’s fringe “independent legislature theory” that ignored the will of the people. As governor, Stein commits to continue to fight to restore faith in democracy, including calling for an independent redistricting commission and returning to nonpartisan judicial elections.
