Josh Stein for North Carolina Launches New Ad Featuring Mom Who Lost Son to Fentanyl Overdose, Highlights Stein’s Record Of Tackling Fentanyl Crisis
“He’s making a difference. He’s a leader. He’s a fighter.”
Last week, Josh Stein for North Carolina launched a new ad highlighting Debbie, a mom who tragically lost her son Hunter to a fentanyl overdose, and sharing her support for Josh Stein for Governor. Too many North Carolinians like Debbie have lost their loved ones to the epidemic of fentanyl. That’s why Attorney General Josh Stein has worked with law enforcement, Democratic and Republican legislators, and a bipartisan coalition of state Attorneys General to tackle the opioid crisis, crack down on drug traffickers, and stop fentanyl at the border.
From her experience losing her son, Debbie makes clear that although she “typically vote[s] Republican,” she intends to vote for Stein this November because “he cares about families like mine” and “he does not back down.”
“Josh Stein works across the aisle to stand up for North Carolina’s families and make our communities safer,” said Jeff Allen, campaign manager for Josh Stein for North Carolina. “He will be a Governor focused on bringing people together to fight for North Carolinians like Debbie and to stop perpetrators who peddle this poison.”
As Attorney General, Stein has called for funding a Fentanyl Control Unit to help local district attorneys handle large-scale fentanyl trafficking, wiretap, and overdose cases and has worked alongside Republicans in the legislature to crack down on fentanyl through the Stop Counterfeit Pill Act, the Novel Opioid Control Act, and North Carolina’s new anti-money laundering law. Stein is also leading a Fentanyl Task Force, bringing local, state, and federal law enforcement leaders together to collaborate on ridding North Carolina communities of fentanyl. This spring, he successfully called on Congress to fund fentanyl scanners at the border to stop the drug from entering the country. Stein also led the national bi-partisan effort of state Attorneys General to hold accountable the big drug companies that created and fueled the opioid crisis, securing more than $50 billion in settlement funds – nearly $1.5 billion for North Carolina to help people struggling with addiction.

DEBBIE: “It all starts with my son, Hunter. He was an amazing young man and just loved life. He was my entire world. He made a bad decision that night. If our son had known about fentanyl, he would still be with us today. And it shocked us to our core, shocked our community to the core.
“Attorney General Josh Stein stood up for families like mine, worked with law enforcement, and worked across party lines to attack the fentanyl crisis. I knew from the minute that I met him that this is a man that is compassionate and concerned and committed.
“I’m going to be very honest here. I typically vote Republican, and I am not in this case because Josh Stein is who I want to be Governor of this state. He cares about families like mine. I’ve seen it, and I believe in him. He does not back down. He will not back down. He’s making a difference. He’s a leader. He’s a fighter. And that’s who I want. He’s going to be a great Governor.”
