Attorney General Josh Stein launched a petition to stop robocalls on Thursday.

The automated telephone calls, which often deliver a recorded message on behalf of a political party or telemarketing company, have begun hitting cellphones hard after years of reaching home phones.

Stein is leading a bipartisan effort involving 40 state attorneys general to stop or at least reduce the number of these calls.

In August, people received more than 4.2 billion robocalls, and many were from scammers trying to trick them out of money.
