The state attorney general is closely monitoring the deal to sell Buncombe County's nonprofit hospital to for-profit HCA Healthcare.

Attorney General Josh Stein said a great deal of resources have been invested in Mission Health -- by the state and the community. Stein said his job is to make sure the public's investment in the nonprofit hospital is protected.

"Are they paying full market value for it, and, then second, when that nonprofit foundation is created, is it independent from the for-profit entity, because what we want to make sure is that this foundation helps to improve the health of Western North Carolina and doesn't just subsidize that for-profit corporation," Stein said.
